Why use
LaTeX instead of a word processing program? For the same reason we encourage you to use a Wikiwyg editor in our wiki instead of a Wysiwyg editor. Because, when I write, I want to be able to choose whether I am focusing on content (what it is I am trying to say), conveyance (how I am saying it), style (appearance/voice/etc.), or some combination of the above. Word processors conflate those roles to the detriment of our ability to communicate, whereas a typesetting program such as
LaTeX (or an agile API such as the DOM) is designed to facilitate just such differentiation of tasks. Allin Cottrell analyses the differences and, more importantly, the effects of those differences on our ability to communicate effectively, in textual communication in
Word Processors: Stupid and Inefficient.
Getting
LaTeX:
- Mac: I love TeXShop. Even better, it now comes as a complete download, with BibDesk (a lovely bibtex client) and all installed.
- Linux: a popular choice is LyX
- Windows: MiKTeX, I found WinEdt which has Miktex integrated and also Vista compatible. Winedt is easy to operate and has many neat functions.
